Exercise, Obesity, and Cancer - K. A. Nyrop - 20161109

Obesity, weight management and physical activity have emerged as central concerns in cancer prevention, care and survivorship and as high priorities in oncology research. Clinical practice guidelines emphasize attention to obesity, weight management and physical activity in survivorship care. Clinical and research leaders have called for oncology providers to take an active role in guideline implementation through proactive recommendations and other direct communications with their patients about the importance of lifestyle changes. Using breast cancer as the primary example, this presentation will provide an overview of the role obesity and sedentary behavior in cancer risk, prognosis and survival; benefits of post-diagnosis weight management and physical activity for wellness and survivorship; and the opportunity for weight and exercise communications during routine clinic visits with the oncology provider. Learning Outcomes: • Discuss clinical practice guidelines pertaining to obesity and physical activity in cancer care and survivorship. • Explain evidence of how obesity and sedentary behavior impact cancer risk, prognosis and survival and the benefits of post-diagnosis weight management and exercise. • Identify information on provider-patient communications about weight and exercise during routine clinic visits. The presentation reviews the evidence and recommendations on nutrition in cancer prevention, treatment and recovery, and provides recommendations for nutrition interventions. Lecture Objectives: -Identify nutrition and lifestyle guidelines for cancer prevention and prevention of cancer recurrence. -Describe the role of sound nutritional choices before, during, and after cancer therapy and how they can help increase energy levels, strengthen the immune system, fight off infection, and minimize the side effects of treatment. -Identify reasons for nutrition referral during treatment and the importance of early referrals at the start of treatment.
