Delivering unpleasant news is never an easy task. Patients and family members process bad news in different ways, some by avoidance. This presentation will talk about strategies for understanding a patient's experience and for interfacing with patients in appropriate and emotionally-sensitive ways. Learning Outcomes: • Describe ways in which patients process "bad news" in the context of the medical setting • Discuss strategies for talking with patients in ways that will increase their understanding of their illness, treatment, and prognosis • Identify strategies for talking honestly with patients about "bad news" in ways that are emotionally-sensitive and appropriate for individual jobs and skill sets This lecture was presented as a part of the RN and Allied Health Series.
