Exercise, Obesity, and Cancer - K. A. Nyrop - 20161109
Obesity, weight management and physical activity have emerged as central concerns in cancer prevention, care and survivorship and as high priorities in oncology research. Clinical practice guidelines emphasize attention to obesity, weight management and physical activity in survivorship care. Clinical and research leaders have called for oncology providers to take an active role in guideline implementation through proactive recommendations and other direct communications with their patients about the importance of lifestyle changes. Using breast cancer as the primary example, this presentation will provide an overview of the role obesity and sedentary behavior in cancer risk, prognosis and survival; benefits of post-diagnosis weight management and physical activity for wellness and survivorship; and the opportunity for weight and exercise communications during routine clinic visits with the oncology provider. Learning Outcomes: • Discuss clinical practice guidelines pertaining to obesity and physical activity in cancer care and survivorship. • Explain evidence of how obesity and sedentary behavior impact cancer risk, prognosis and survival and the benefits of post-diagnosis weight management and exercise. • Identify information on provider-patient communications about weight and exercise during routine clinic visits. This lecture was presented as a part of the RN and Allied Health Lecture Series.
